NHTSA VIN Vehicle Lookup

Use the public NHTSA vPIC decoder as a starting point for vehicle identification and case-specific weight research.

Method overview

VIN → NHTSA vPIC identification fields → case vehicle record

The lookup can populate basic identity fields and help organize the case vehicle library. Calculations should use verified case-specific dimensions and weights when they materially affect the result.

Evidence to document

  • The complete VIN recorded from the vehicle.
  • The decoded year, make, model, series, and body class.
  • Measured or authoritative curb and loaded weights.
  • Occupants, cargo, fuel, modifications, and attached equipment.

Limitations

A decoded VIN is not proof of the vehicle's collision-time weight or configuration. Verify material values against the inspected vehicle and authoritative records.

Record measurements, assumptions, units, rounding, and source material so another investigator can reproduce the result. See the methodology and validation center for verification policy and citation guidance.
